State Attorney Steve Meadows announces the conviction, in Gulf County Circuit Court, of Thomas A. Crandall, for two counts of Transmission of Materials Harmful to Minors via Internet Connection.

Crandall, 51, of Mobile, Alabama, was arrested in June, 2005, at the conclusion of an investigation by the Gulf County Sheriff’s Office. Investigator Chris Buchanan posed, on-line, as a 15-year old boy with whom Crandall communicated with sexually suggestive language. Assistant State Attorney Brian Hill presented evidence, to the three man, three woman jury, that Crandall transmitted an obscene photograph and a video depicting sexual activity on March 22, 2005.

With the assistance of the FBI, officers recovered the hard drive from Crandall’s home computer and discovered the same images there.

Circuit Judge Judy M. Pittman set sentencing for 9:30 a.m.(EDT), on June 20, 2006. Crandall faces five years in prison for each count. He also has a pending hold from the U.S. Marshall’s Service.

This was the first trial on internet crimes against children in the 14th Circuit.
